Midwest Environmental Advocates (MEA) is a nonprofit law center based in Madison, WI, dedicated to securing and protecting the rights of all people to healthy water, land, and air. They combine the power of law with the resolve of communities facing environmental injustice, playing a unique and vital role in Wisconsin. MEA is the only nonprofit environmental law center in the state that provides direct legal services to individuals and grassroots groups, empowering them to confront environmental threats.
Through strategic legal action, policy advocacy, and community education, MEA achieves significant victories. Their work includes preventing exposure to toxic PFAS chemicals by advocating for statewide water quality standards, accelerating the transition to clean energy by defending affordable solar power, and preventing the privatization of Great Lakes water. They also preserve environmental oversight of large livestock operations and ensure public access to pollution records, upholding transparency and accountability.
MEA's collaborative approach is rooted in values of community, stewardship, empowerment, and justice. They are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, striving for a more powerful and equitable environmental justice movement in Wisconsin, and actively supporting Native people and governments within the state.
