The Cinematheque at the University of Wisconsin–Madison serves as the premier screening facility for academic departments and student film groups, dedicated to presenting exceptional international cinema history and fine films that would otherwise be inaccessible in Madison. As an integral part of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research (WCFTR) and a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), the Cinematheque regularly features rare archival prints from its extensive collection and global partners.
Committed to an unparalleled viewing experience, the Cinematheque boasts one of Wisconsin's finest projection facilities, capable of screening diverse formats including DCP, 35mm, and 16mm, along with various video formats. Its policy ensures films are shown in their best available versions, with correct aspect ratios and, for silent films, appropriate speed and musical accompaniment. All screenings are free and open to the public, making world-class cinema accessible to the Madison community during university semesters and select summer weeks.
