The Bartell Theatre in Madison, WI, is a cornerstone of the local performing arts scene, serving as the oldest collaboratively-run performing arts institution in the United States. Founded on principles of inclusiveness, diversity, integrity, and respect, the Gerald A. Bartell Community Theatre Foundation equips, operates, and maintains a vibrant live-performance facility. It provides a crucial platform for its Participating Theatre Companies (PTCs) and other publicly supported organizations to present diverse and engaging productions.
This unique collaborative model brings together five resident theatre companies: Madison Theatre Guild, Mercury Players Theatre, StageQ, Madison Shakespeare Company, and Madison Public Theatre. Within its historic walls, dating back to 1906, Madison artists tell stories that transform, enlighten, and entertain audiences, fostering deep community involvement in the arts. From classic musicals and Shakespearean dramas to new, unusual, and LGBTQ+ focused works, the Bartell Theatre is dedicated to enriching lives through a wide spectrum of theatrical experiences.
